Minnesota DHIA News

A PUBLICATION OF MINNESOTA DHIA                                                   Volume 9, Issue  1                                                           January, 2009

National Quality Award Winners

Congratulations to Platinum level winners Kenneth and Ralph Schefers of Paynesville, and thanks for using DHIA and Scout software to help achieve that quality (and thanks for sharing that with Hoard’s readers).  There were only 8 herds from around the US that won the Platinum Award, so this is pretty elite company.  We note that a feature article in the same issue was authored by Dr. Jeremy Schefers of the U of M.

Silver winners in the National Awards included Tom and Kim Fuechtmann of Melrose and Michael and Miranda Welle of Freeport.  There were only 13 herds nationwide that won the Silver Quality Award. Congratulations to the Welles and Fuechtmanns for this remarkable accomplishment.

 “COOL” tags, hot site       EarTagCentral.com

Botton tags shown above are 53 cents on this automated DHIA site, a savings of 6 cents per tag.

“Basic Test” is available as an alternative to processing data through a Dairy Records Processing Center.  Basic provides you with the same certified Field Rep, Meters, and Lab services.  Data is available for access by consultants and vets over the Loop.  Basic herds do not go to USDA, Herd Averages are not calculated, there is no publicity or awards, and the price is 11 cents per cow less than processed herds.  Herds on DHIR or Young Sire programs cannot use Basic and no genetic information is calculated on Basics.  Ask your DHIA Field Rep for details on your next sample day.

January Report Extras

In your packet:

·        The “Herd Management Comparison” report on tan paper shows your key herd data for January of 2009 compared the same data from one year ago, so you can note progress.  There is also a goal column that is standardized to a 10% improvement (we hope to allow you to customize that soon).  The last column is the breed average for your state, or for a larger region for breeds with fewer herds.  This report comes out twice a year and replaces the old report that was included with local annual meeting packets.  Sending them with your reports helps protect your privacy and provides you with the information in a much more timely fashion.

·        The “Test Day Bulk Tank” report is printed on white paper and replaces the old Tank Contribution report that was on yellow paper.  The new report has much larger print, and the “Value Adjusted by SCC” column now applies the deduct or premium based on the individual cow SCC.  Previous SCC has also been added for your convenience.  At implementation, all herds on the SCC option will get this report.  In the future, you will need to order the report through your Field Rep.

On your farm on sample day

·        Ask your Field Rep to print inventory lists for 2008 calendar year.  Get a list of cows sold, cows that died, calves sold, calves died, or any combination.  Have the report listed in any order you prefer.  Specific commands have been provided to your Field Rep on their computer message screen.
