National Animal Identification System (NAIS) Update

1.      USDA plans to start issuing the Animal Identification Numbers (AIN) to tag manufacturers this July.  AIN numbers will start with 840 (USA country code) followed by 12 numbers.  Minnesota DHIA will contract with a manufacturer and offer RFID tags as well as package deals on RFID and management tags to our customers once the official 840 numbers are released, and tag manufacturers are approved by USDA.

2.      The Minnesota Board of Animal Health, regulatory arm within the state that is responsible for NAIS implementation and operation, has had their Premise Identification system approved by USDA technology wizards from Ft. Collins Colorado, where the National Premises Allocator resides.  They are currently keying applications and it may be a month before they get caught up.  You will receive a card in the mail with your number on it when it is assigned.  There are over 10,000 farms that have already applied.  If you haven’t sent your card back, we suggest you do so.  You may also register on-line at www.bah.state.mn.us.  You will need to have a premise ID to order tags, and in the event of any disease outbreak that accelerates the implementation dates, you will want to have your Premise ID and not have to wait in line!

Making Quality Happen

Bob Kummet from Pierz reports that two years ago the Bulk Tank SCC for his 40 cow herd was about 600,000 and he realized that he needed to do something about it. So he worked with his Veterinarian to adopt better management practices for his dairy. These included closer attention to proper milking procedures, pre-dipping, keeping stalls cleaner by using more bedding and scraping more often, and properly maintaining his milking equipment. The results tell the rest of the story--his SCC for the March 9, 2005 DHIA test was 69,000. Bob says "It comes down to paying attention to details--and the payback is about $600/month in quality premiums".  Thanks to Mr. Kummet for his commitment to quality and willingness to share his experience.

Minnesota DHIA dairies are now at 22 straight months (and counting) of monthly average SCCs that are at a 5-year low.  The average for April was 345,000, an improvement of 24,000 from last April.  Median SCC for April was 300,000 (as many herds below 300,000 as above).

A new series of DHIA reports looking in depth at SCC in your herd and providing benchmarks so you can see where you stand relative to other DHIA herds started May 1.  See the new report and explanation immediately following this message.  These reports were developed by MN DHIA and are provided at not charge.  Congratulations on Quality improvements and Thank You!

A new DHIA policy that takes affect for the 2005 testing year states that in order for a herd to be eligible for recognition and awards from Minnesota DHIA, it must have an annual percent milk sold of no higher than 108%.  If you are at or above this level, please visit with your Field Rep on your next sample day.
