ALFALFA HAY AND HAYLAGE TESTING AVAILABLE

The Stearns DHIA lab offers testing of all forages on NIR (Near-Infra Red) or Wet Chemistry. The lab processes up to 250 samples per day for DHIA members, cooperatives, feed companies, commercial hay producers and hay auctions. Samples are being tested from as far away as Texas, Washington and Canada. When Minnesota customers mail samples one day, the lab receives them the next forenoon, tests them and e-mails or faxes the results back the same afternoon for quick one day turnaround. Results may also be mailed out. The cost is $9.50 for NIR. To receive free sample bags, input forms and postage paid mailers for mailing in alfalfa samples call 1-800-369-2697.

Water testing is also available at Stearns. The lab is now certified to test water for livestock and domestic suitability. They offer several options. For more information or a sampling kit, call 1-800-369-2697.

ICE CREAM TRIVIA

You probably knew July is Ice Cream month, but did you also know . . .

1) Historians estimate that ice cream evolved sometime during the 16th century?

2) Rumor has it that ice cream came from a recipe that Marco Polo brought back to Italy from the Orient?

3) Ronald Reagan designated July as a time to honor America's favorite dessert in 1984?

4) The first improvement in the manufacture of ice cream (from the handmade way in a large bowl) was given to us by an American woman, Nancy Johnson, who in 1846 invented the hand-cranked freezer?

5) Commercial production of ice cream began in Baltimore, Maryland in 1851, by Mr. Jacob Fussell, now known as the father of the American ice cream industry?

6) The ice cream cone first became popular at the St. Louis Fair in 1904? They called it the "World's Fair Cornucopia"?
