Making the Milk Quality Leaders List
Each month, we recognize 100 herds with the lowest Somatic Cell Counts. This list is based on herds that were processed through the ATA records system. That is not necessarily the list of herds sampled because the herd may not process before we cut off for the database.
Making this list is quite the achievement, and you will note that there are many herds that make the list month after month. To make the list for the August is quite the achievement given the weather we have had. Many herds saw SCC skyrocket in August. Congratulations to those on this list.
We know that there are some herds that ask Field Reps not to sample cows that are known high SCC cows. We don’t know why people would not want this most valuable piece of management information that DHIA provides and that they are paying for. If a Field Rep does not sample and take milk weights on a cow that is milked, that is a violation of the Standard Operating Procedures for DHIA as established by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding and National DHIA. If a herd owner tells a Field Rep not to sample a cow, that is a violation of the Code of Ethics for DHIA Members that has been agreed to by the Member. It also doesn’t make much sense.
Kozitka reaches 30 Years of Service
We would like to send our sincere congratulations and a big thank you to Wayne Kozitka from Howard Lake. He is celebrating his 30th year with Minnesota DHIA. Wayne services herds in the Wright County area. Please be sure to extend your congratulations and thanks to Wayne when he visits your farm this month.
New Member Drive
Minnesota DHIA is seeking new members this fall. There are special incentives for Field Reps, and discounts for new members. Pass along any prospect names you may have to your Field Rep on the next sample day, or call them in to us at 800.827.3442. We encourage all Field Reps to offer 12 tests per year to all customers, and we (and most consultants that visit dairies) recommend herds test every month.
It would be wise to obtain your Premises ID today, before the rush that will happen as USDA implements its requirement. Register your Premises today by calling the Board of Animal Health at 651.201.6816 or go to www.bah.state.mn.us.
