| A PUBLICATION OF MINNESOTA DHIA Volume 4, Issue 10 | October 2004 |
In order to be published in the year-end Annual Summary for Minnesota DHIA, herds must have 11 tests in calendar year 2004, and must have selected the publicity option. To check, look at the lower left corner of your herd summary report. It will say either "Publication" or "No Record Publication". To change your option, talk to your Field Rep on sample day.
Taste of Dairy Comp 305
Summary data and benchmark numbers have been developed by Minnesota DHIA using the Dairy Comp 305 cowfiles sent in by your Field Rep each sample day. The new reports are included in this packet and are on yellow paper near the front of the packet. There is no charge for the reports.
One of the reports is a Management Herd Summary showing a variety of summaries available every day to Dairy Comp 305 and Scout users.
The other report grabs one of those boxes of data, enlarges it, explains it, and provides benchmarks so you can measure your herd. Depending on the data presented, we will list averages, and may include the average from the top 25% of all herds.
The goal for these reports is to provide you with additional management information (and not the same data every month), to give Dairy Comp 305 and Scout users (one of every 6 DHIA herds) some new ideas and insights on the reports they access daily, and to provide the benchmark data.
On farm software users need to be sure your cleanup settings are set to save information for 365 days. If the settings are not for 365, the data will be incomplete.
The National Animal Identification System continues to move towards implementation. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health and Department of Agriculture have an industry committee working on implementation in Minnesota. Minnesota DHIA Manager Bruce Dokkebakken is a member of that committee, as well as of USDA’s Bovine Working Group, and the US Animal Health Association’s Animal Identification Committee. A few thousand cows in our system have RFID tags.
Congratulations!
Milk Quality Continues to ImproveThe average Somatic Cell Count for September DHIA sample days was 368,000. That represents an improvement of 37,000 (10%) from August and 67,000 from September of 2003. Median SCC for September was 328,000 (as many herds above that level as below). September was the 16th consecutive month where SCC levels dropped below or stayed the same as the SCC levels for the same month in the previous year.
Milk Quality Leaders for September 2004 sample days
(SCC in 1,000s) are listed on the back.|
