Is My Herd Improving? Find Out with the Herd Progress Report
Have my production levels changed?
Am I making progress with getting cows bred on time?
Has my turnover rate increased?
Comparisons are very helpful when setting goals and monitoring the progress of your management parameters. This monthly report provides a quick way to track your herd’s progress over all your processed tests with DRMS in key areas:
· Production - milking cow average for days in milk, 1-40 day milk, and rolling herd average
· Milk Components and SCC - milk lbs., fat lbs, fat %, protein/solids %, and SCC
·
Reproduction - % bred at 100 days in milk, % successful breedings, % pregnant, pregnancy
rate and service sire $
·
Somatic Cell Counts - % 1st lactation cows , %
older cows with SCC Score of 4 or less, SCC
score for total herd
·
General Management - % of cows in milk, number of fresh cows, projected
minimum calving
interval, days dry, turnover rate, and death rate
Each area is listed with your figures for all tests processed by DRMS. Each month an additional test will be added - up to 24 tests processed by DRMS will list.
In addition to providing you with critical management information, this report can be helpful for dairy or financial consultants working with your herd.
Try It Out! A free Herd Progress report for YOUR herd is enclosed! Check your herd’s trends and progress. Missing data will fill in with more tests.
Rules
for your data to be included in year-end publications from Minnesota DHIA:
1. Publicity option is Yes (see your herd
summary or visit with your Field Rep on sample day)
2. Production is above average.
3. Normal fat / protein ratio.
4. 11 tests in the last 365 days as of the last
processed test of the year
5. Last test processes (goes through lab and
record processing – not sample day) by December 31.
Note that annual percent milk sold will be published, but there are no minimums or maximum values.

What is the value of your DHIA numbers?
Numerous statistics on the 302 Herd Summary can be given a dollar value as to how much money an improvement in the statistic can generate. For example, let's look at increasing your Peak Milk.
If you increase peak milk 1 pound, you can increase herd production by $49 per cow per year.
So… A herd of 80 cows that can increase their peak milk from 78 to 79 pounds will increase their herd production 80 x $49 x 1 lb = $3,920.
How much can you make on your herd?
Number of Cows_________________ x $49 x Change in Peak Milk________________
