Minnesota DHIA News
A PUBLICATION OF MINNESOTA DHIA Volume 5, Issue 12 December 2005
With gratitude in our hearts, we thank you for your tireless efforts every day in feeding our nation and our world. Thanks for the quality of the food you produce, and the care you provide for the animals that produce that food. Yours is a high calling. You have our respect. Our sincere hope is that we can continue to play a part in your success. While much in agriculture change, what stays constant is the pleasure of working with producers who care, who constantly strive to improve, and who challenge us to do the same.
Special thanks to the local directors and leaders who give their time, effort, and good thoughts to help make DHIA work, and work better, on the local, state, and national levels. Bruce Dokkebakken
A new DHIA policy that takes affect for the 2005 testing year states that in order for a herd to be eligible for recognition and awards from Minnesota DHIA, it must have an annual percent milk sold of no higher than 108%. If you are at or above this level, please visit with your Field Rep on your next sample day. In order to be published in the year-end Annual Summary for Minnesota DHIA, herds must have 11 tests in calendar year 2005, and must have selected the publicity option. To check, look at the lower left corner of your herd summary report. It will say either “Publication” or “No Record Publication”. To change your option, talk to your Field Rep on sample day.
Minnesota DHIA Anniversaries
Our sincere congratulations go out to our hard working Minnesota DHIA employees who have reached milestones this month. Ray Scherber from Osseo is celebrating his 45th year of service, Field Rep Melvin Grabau from Wykoff is celebrating 35 years of service, Regional Manager, Glen Anding is celebrating 20 years of service and Stearns Lab employee, Eugene Jennisen is celebrating 10 years of service. Please join us in extending our thanks to them for all the good work they do for our organization.
National Animal Identification System (NAIS) Update
Over 4,000 animals in our DHIA system are now tagged with Radio Frequency Identification Tags (RFID). We provided RFID tag ordering information to Field Reps at conferences in November, and those of you who want to get started with the system are able to do so.
On farm software updates being sent out at renewal (starting in December) will update your software to handle the Premise ID and new RFID numbers.
We are now able to handle the Premise ID number(s) in the Field Rep computers. Please give your Premise ID to your Field Rep on sample day only if you would like DHIA to forward basic data to the state systems. We are currently working with the Board of Animal Health to submit the minimal transaction data (animals sold or purchased, animals retagged, and tags assigned to your premise) for those herds who want to start participating. Minnesota law protects the data in the system from be accessed by any private entity.
Congratulations to November Milk Quality Leaders
