The Consultant Summary
This table provides information regarding the breeding program for the herd. Items provided include the number of animals being summarized, the percentage of AI used on groups of animals, the NM$ (Net Merit dollar value) and the % Rank Percentile Ranking.
- Num: - The number of animals being summarized.
- % AI: - Shows the percentage of AI used on groups of animals.
- NM$: - Net Merit is the dollar value combining Milk, Fat, Protein, SCC, and herd life of the average animal compared to the industry base.
- % Rank: - The percentile ranking of the animal compared to the current industry standard.
SERVICE SIRES
Lists the number of animals with service sires reported for the specific group of animals for example: Yearlings, Lactation 1, 2, 3+ and all cows.
ANIMAL PTA
Animal Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA) is the transmitting ability for individual animals in the groups. For calves it is the average PTA for their dams and sires. Lactating cows PTA is calculated by USDA if the cow has a known AI sire and birth date. Percentile Rank is going to drop
with older animals.
SIRE PTA
Sire Predicted Transmitting Ability is the values of sires for those groups of animals. For example, what percent of AI is used on them, net merit of those animals and % rank of those animals' sires.
Inventory gives the distribution of the age, number of animals, and % identified by the Dam and Sire of the animal. Inventory breaks down the animals by calves (who are less than one year), yearlings (over one year old & haven't calved) and lactation number.
- Cows Entering and Leaving Herd provides a summary list of the number of animals that have entered and left the herd during the past year by lactation number.
- Reasons for Leaving: - Breaks down the reasons why the animals
left the herd. The reasons are Dairy (sold for dairy), Low Milk production, Reproduction problems, Sick, Mastitis, Foot and Leg problems, Disposition, Died and unknown reasons. You need to report the reason cows left the herd to the field rep in order for this data to be accurate.
- % Cull Rate: - Number of animals that left the herd in each lactation divided by the number of animals in that lactation plus the number of animals that left the herd.
- Left Herd: - Percentage of animals that left the herd for a specific reason.
BREEDING HERD-COWS
- Animals: - The number of cows in the herd 45+ days since calving or reported bred.
- Animals Served: - Percent of cows bred one or more times.
- Waiting Period: - The estimated days since calving before the cow breeding begins.
- First Served: - The percent of cows bred when less than 100 days in milk.
- Time to First Service: - Average DIM since calving at first breeding of cows that have been bred.
- Services per animal: - Average number of breedings per cow that have been bred.
- Open Period: - Percent of cows reported bred less than 150 days since calving.
- Minimum Calving Interval: - (Average days since calving at last breeding + 280) divided by 30.4 (average days in a month). This is the calving interval if all cows are pregnant to the latest breeding.
- Heat Detection Index: - An estimate of the percentage of heats observed based on breeding and/or recorded heat intervals.
BREEDING HERD-HEIFERS
You need to report breedings on heifers for this information to be complete.
- Animals: - Number of heifers in the herd 13+ months or reported bred.
- Animals Served: - Percent of heifers bred 1+ times.
- Waiting Period: - The estimated age in months when heifer breeding begins.
- First Served: - The percent of heifers bred to first breeding less than < 15 months.
- Time to First Serviced: - Average age at first breeding of heifers bred 1+ times.
- Services per Animals: - Average number of breedings per heifers bred 1+ times.
- Open Period: - Percent of heifers bred less than 17 months of age.
- Minimum Calving Interval(months): - (Average days of age at last breeding + 280) divided by 30.5 (average days in a month).
- Heat Detection Index: - An estimate of the percentage of heats observed based on breeding and/or recorded heat intervals.
PREGNANT ANIMALS-COWS
- Animals: - Number of cows declared pregnant.
- Conceived at First Service: - Percent of cows bred one time and declared pregnant at that breeding.
- Services per Conception: - The average number of breedings per cow bred, on pregnant cows.
- Pregnancy Rate: - Heat Detection Index divided by services per conception or Heat Detection Rate times Conception Rate.
- Open Period: - The average number of days during the current lactation when an animal was not pregnant. It is calculated as the time period from calving to conception in days. Cows not reported pregnant are considered open.
- Calving Interval: - (Open Period in days + 280) / by 30.4.
- Calving Interval Standard Deviation: - The standard deviation of Calving Interval Open Period divided by 30.4. The standard deviation is a measure of variation around the average. A small number indicates most cows have a similar length Calving Interval.
- Management Calving Interval: - Estimates the average calving interval without using breeding information. The variables used are annual average DIM from averaging the test-day DIM in the Production Averages section, and the Average Days Dry from the Dry Period Summary. The calculation is: (2 X DIM + Days Dry) / 30.4.
PREGNANT ANIMALS-HEIFERS
- Animals: - Number of heifers declared pregnant.
- Conceived at First Service: - Percent of heifers bred one time and declared pregnant to that breeding.
- Services per Conception: - The average number of breedings per heifer bred.
- Pregnancy Rate: - Heat Detection Index divided by Services per Conception.
- Open Period: - The average number of months during the heifer's life when an she was not pregnant. It is calculated as the time period from birth to conception in months.
- Calving Interval: - Average age at calving or (open period days + 280) / by 30.4.
- Calving Interval-Standard Deviation: - The standard deviation of average age at calving. The standard deviation is a measure of variation around the average. A small number indicates most heifers calve at a similar age.
Daily Milk Production and Feed Consumption values are given for important production income and feed items. If groups of cows, including dry cows, are fed differently, you should report feed by group.
